Vilhelm Már Thorsteinsson

Chief Executive Officer, was born in 1971. He was appointed as CEO in January 2019. For over 20 years, he held various positions at bank Íslandsbanki. He was Managing Director of Corporate & Investment Banking at Íslandsbanki from 2017 to 2019 and Managing Director of Corporate Banking from 2008 to 2017. He is a Board Member of the Chamber of Commerce in Iceland and a Board Member and/or CEO of various subsidiaries of Eimskipafélag Íslands hf.  Vilhelm earned an MBA Degree from Pace University in New York; a BSc degree in Business Management, Majoring in Logistics, from Reykjavík University; and is a licensed Securities broker.

Egill Örn Petersen

Chief Financial Officer, was born in 1974. He has worked for Eimskip since 2003, first as a Financial Controller within the finance department and later as a manager. He became Senior Manager of Finances in 2009 and was appointed as CFO of Eimskip following organizational changes in January 2019. He is a Board Member of various company subsidiaries. Egill received a BSc degree in Business Administration from the University of Iceland in 2002.

Hilmar Pétur Valgardsson

Chief Operational Officer, was born in 1973. He has worked for Eimskip since 1999 and has held the current position since January 2019. From 20092019, he was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and CFO of HF. Eimskipafélag Íslands, now A1988 hf., from 2008 to 2009. He was CFO of Containerships Ltd. OY in Finland from 2006 to 2008 and Senior Manager of Eimskip’s Financial Control Department from 2004 to 2006. Hilmar is currently a Board Member and Managing Director of various subsidiaries of Eimskipafélag Íslands hf. Before, Hilmar was a Board Member of Containerships UAB, Containerships Polska, Air Atlanta Properties Ltd., Air Atlanta Aero Engineering Ltd., Vátryggingafélag Íslands hf. and Líftryggingafélag Íslands hf. Hilmar received a Cand. Oecon. degree from the University of Iceland in 1999.

Edda Rut Björnsdóttir

Executive Vice President of Human Resources and Communication, was born in 1980. She has worked for Eimskip since 2019, first as Head of Marketing and Communication and then she was appointed EVP of Human Resources and Communication in early 2020. She has over 20 years of diverse work experience. She worked in the IT sector for many years and in the financial sector at Íslandsbanki for 12 years in various roles e.g. as Executive Director of Customer Relationship Management and Sales in the bank's Corporate and Investment Banking division. Edda is a Board Member of Eimskip Ísland ehf., a subsidiary of Eimskipafélag Íslands hf. Edda Rut has a BSc. in Business Administration with an emphasis on Computer Science from Reykjavík University.

Björn Einarsson

Executive Vice President of Sales and Business Management, was born in 1969. He was appointed as EVP following organizational changes made in February 2020. Björn has worked for Eimskip and subsidiaries for 14 years, for example as Managing Director of Eimskip in Europe, based in the Netherlands, and for the past ten years as Managing Director of TVG-Zimsen. Björn is currently Chairman of the Board of TVG- Zimsen and its subsidiaries Gára and Skipakostur. He is also a board member of Eimskip Greenland and a board member of Discover True North. Björn holds a BA degree in Political Science from the University of Iceland.

Gudmundur Nikulásson

Executive Vice President of Iceland Domestic Operations, was born in 1961. He has worked for Eimskip since 1997 and has held the current position since June 2016. He was Vice President of Iceland Domestic Operations from 2005 to 2016 and served as Senior Manager of Terminal Operations from 1997 to 2005. Gudmundur held the position of Chief Engineer for the City of Reykjavík from 1991 to 1997. From 1987 to 1991, he was a consulting engineer at Hnit hf. He is currently a Board Member of various subsidiaries of Eimskipafélag Íslands hf. Gudmundur received an MSc in Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark in 1987. He earned a BSc degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Iceland in 1985.

Bragi Thór Marinósson

Executive Vice President of International Operations, was born in 1965. Bragi has worked for Eimskip since 1993 and has held the current position since 2008. He has been based in The Netherlands since June 2016. He was the EVP of North Atlantic Operations from 2006 to 2008, and EVP of International Operations from 2004 to 2006. He was a Managing Director of Eimskip Nederland B.V. from 1999 to 2004, Senior Manager of the International Department from 1997 to 1999, Quality Manager from 1995 to 1997, and a representative in the International Department from 1993 to1995. Bragi is currently a board member of various Eimskip group subsidiaries. He received an MSc degree in Industrial Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark in 1993 and a C.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Iceland in 1991.

Hilmar karlsson

Chief Information Officer and head of IT and Business Process Management, was born in 1971. He has worked for Eimskip since 2017 and in his current role since 2018. For over 10 years he held various management positions related to IT at Arion Banki. Head of IT Operations from 2006 to 2011 and head of Software Development responsible for online banking, APP development, and CRM development from 2011 to 2017. Hilmar Karlsson received a cand sci degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland in 1997.

The 'CEO is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Company in accordance with the Board of Director’s policies and instructions, the Company’s Articles of Association, and laws and regulations.  The CEO reports to the Board on the Company’s operational and financial performance at Board meetings. The CEO appoints Executive Managing Directors and leads the Executive Management Board & Delegates. 

Executive Management Board

The Company’s operations are divided into four divisions and three support divisions. There are three business divisions; Iceland Sales and Business Management, Iceland Domestic Operations, and International Operations. An Operations Division and then three support divisions; Finance, Human Resources and Communications, and IT and Business Process Management. Additionally, the General Counsel reports to the CEO. The heads of the business-, operations- and support units form the Company's Executive Management Board & Delegates together with the CEO. 

General Counsel and Compliance Officer 

General Counsel and Compliance Officer are responsible for the company's legal affairs.


The Finance Division is responsible for financial management, e.g. financing and liquidity management, the collection of trade receivables, financial statement preparation and accounting matters, monthly reporting, forecasting and cost controls, and the preparation of the group’s budgeting. 

Human Resources and Communication 

The Human Resources and Communication Division is responsible for human resources including recruitment, employee learning and development, and remuneration. The Division is also responsible for corporate social responsibility, marketing, communication, investor relations, and the Company’s global service policy. 

IT and Business Process Management 

IT and Business Process Management's main goal is to deliver value to the business and shareholders by optimizing end-to-end processes and deliver smart IT solutions based on an efficient and solid IT foundation. 


Operations main responsibilities are to secure reliable and efficient management of the Company’s container sailing systems including fleet management of vessels, container units, and third-party terminal agreements.  Operations are responsible for the management of the company's own and charter vessel fleet, both container and reefer vessels including shares in associated vessel ownership companies. Operations are also responsible for Safety and Security management for the group including, insurances, claims handling, and loss prevention projects. 

Iceland Sales and Business Management 

Iceland Sales and Business Management (SBM) division is responsible for global end-to-end sales of Eimskip liner network, offering customers both in Iceland and global markets, market-leading solutions for freight to & from Iceland and Greenland. SBM is actively engaged in close monitoring of its results, revenue, and cost control. Focusing on profitability and competitiveness   

Furthermore, SBM via its subsidiaries is providing worldwide sea and air freight forwarding solutions, as well as a strong focus on e-commerce, Pharma Logistics, Marine Logistics, and other tailor-made forwarding services in the North Atlantic market.  

SBM services are provided to diverse customer base and industries, from individuals to large Internationals.  

Iceland Domestic Operation 

Iceland Domestic operations are responsible for all operational systems and facility management in Iceland except the liner vessel & container operations. The main activities are trucking and distribution, warehousing, cold store operation, terminal operation, and ferry operation.   

International Operations 

International Operations is responsible for the operation of the Eimskip’s group companies outside Iceland with 41 services centers in 18 countries.  Main activities are liner services in Faroe Islands, Norway, Trans-Atlantic and short sea, agency services, warehousing, cold store operations, trucking, and worldwide logistics services.  International headquarters are located in the Netherlands.
